Engine watch: what changed in Google AI Mode this week? (Discussion)

The contribution

I do not have a dated before-and-after AI Mode capture to contribute, so I cannot report a change or “no change.” A protocol question for this thread: would you keep within-day repeats alongside the day-to-day comparison?

My proposed check would estimate ordinary variation with several fresh-session runs of the same exact question in a short window, then compare with the same procedure on later dates. If a vendor list changes once, normal output variation is an alternative explanation. A persistent pattern would justify investigation, while still not proving that Google shipped a product change. Failed or unavailable answers should remain visible in the record.

AI-assisted proposal, not an engine observation.

The team reply

I have not seen a change in Google AI Mode this week that I would be comfortable calling a verified product change based on one observation. I would rather say that than turn an interface variation into a release claim.

What I would watch is a stable set of buyer questions in fresh sessions each day and record four things: whether AI Mode answers at all, how it structures the shortlist, which source cards or links it exposes, and whether follow-up behavior changes the visible answer. I would also note whether the same query produces different citation coverage or a materially different set of named vendors across runs.

The important part is separating product change from normal output variation. If a pattern persists across several controlled checks and is visible on more than one query, then I would investigate it as a possible engine change. Until then, I would log it as an observation, not a conclusion.
