The first test: start with the buyer and verify the gap
The first test
In a hypothetical case, a software company is named by ChatGPT but not by Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews or Google AI Mode. Before proposing a change, identify one missing fact. Then propose a small test, a comparison, a fixed observation window and a result that would make you abandon your explanation.
I'd first establish what the software does, who buys it and what problem sends that buyer looking for alternatives. That tells me which question to test and which companies belong in the comparison.
I took a similar approach with my venue: I asked AI to identify competitors, with geography defining the market. That research led me toward Google and Yelp. I then built English and Spanish QR cards so customers could reach our review pages from their phones.
For this software company, I'd define competitors by sector and use case, then run identical buyer questions through all five engines. I'd record the answers and cited sources, looking for places competitors appear but this company doesn't. I'd also check what information those sources actually contain. A citation gives me somewhere to investigate; it doesn't explain the engine's reasoning.
The venue project addressed access to local review pages. Here, the useful change might be correcting an incomplete product description on a relevant industry listing. I'd choose one gap supported by the evidence and test that change alone.
I'd record a seven-day baseline, then repeat the same questions for four weeks, holding location and account context steady and tracking unchanged competitors for comparison. If the supposed source gap wasn't there, I'd drop the explanation. If it was corrected but mentions stayed flat, I'd reconsider it. If the correction hadn't become visible or results were too variable, I'd report an inconclusive test rather than claim success.
